New Mobility Live is a new monthly interview series that I am excited to share with you. I have wanted to create a show like this since my online comedy series My Gimpy Life, and between the rise of virtual interviews (thanks, COVID-19!) and my settling in as New Mobility’s media columnist, the pieces fell into place.
I am proud to partner with New Mobility and United Spinal Association to produce the series. The magazine’s insightful and authentic coverage of wheelchair users has made a huge impact on my life.
My first guest on New Mobility Live is Andrea Dalzell, who is NM’s 2020 Person of the Year, winner of the Craig H. Neilsen Visionary Prize and — perhaps the title she prefers the most — a nurse.
I had the honor of writing her cover story and it was a joy to reconnect with her and have this conversation.
In our interview, Dalzell shares some wisdom for 2021 as well as her fascinating experience working as a nurse during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. She also tells us about her new foundation, The Seated Position, which she created to help bridge the gap between education and employment for those with physical disabilities. So be sure to watch the video!
Meanwhile, five quick Qs for Andrea Dalzell:
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not working? Sleep. I also like to watch movies. It’s great to turn off my phone, forget everything else that is going on, and get lost in a story.
Number of pushes you have done in a day tracked on your Apple Watch? 45,000. I was in Washington, D.C., for a conference. The hotel was attached to the conference center and I went back and forth between them over 17 times that day.
Dream Dinner Dates? Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama.
What is something you are looking forward to in 2021? Finishing my master’s degree in nursing.
What’s on your bucket list? To swim in the Great Barrier Reef. I don’t know how to swim yet, so that’s a big one.
