Wheelchair Giveaway Celebrates the Holiday Spirit

On Dec. 22, A-Z Pawn celebrated the holidays by sharing the gift of mobility — the Norwich, Conn., business gave away 22 power wheelchairs, each valued between $3,800-$20,000.

This marks the fourth year in a row A-Z Pawn has done this — so far the business has given away approximately 100 power chairs. The business accepts donated power chairs from around the state, refurbishes them, and then donates them to people who desperately need a power chair but don’t qualify for any government programs.

A-Z Pawn advertises the giveaway and people send in letters explaining why they need a power chair. This year the business received over 70 letters.

The wheelchair giveaway is also raising awareness of the many cracks and shortfalls in the system in regards to mobility needs with politicians — this year state Sen. Cathy Osten visited the giveaway and said she would look into possible legislation to address why so many people can’t get the chairs they need.
