In Praise of Coffee

Oct 17 10:19

I’ve read the studies on caffeine and MS, how doping up on coffee just makes for a devastating crash later. And I’m sure those studies have merit. But I don’t care. Besides other studies suggest coffee may be good for disabilities like MS. It’s sure good for me! On those hard, long, days when my head feels heavier than my body, my body feels like it’s wrapped in heavy foam, and I have to look up my own phone number, I find nothing hones the bluntness of fatigue into a bit of an edge better than good old Starbucks Italian roast.

On really really REALLY bad days Red Bull gives me wings. And why not? Yes, it’s true that after a long caffeinated day, I’ll be a puddle by 7 p.m. But as long as I crash after 5 p.m., no harm no foul in my opinion.

I bet you think I’m a hard-core caffeine addict who can’t go an hour or two without a cuppa cuppa. Well, that’s not true. During the time periods when fatigue rarely bugs me, I just drink one cup of coffee in the morning and sometimes – gasp! – I don’t even finish it. Generally I only very rarely drink soda or tea or any other caffeinated beverage. Not for any high-faluting health-related reason – I just prefer the taste of coffee in the morning. So the idea that caffeine is highly-addictive, while possibly true for some, isn’t true for me.

Coffee doesn’t just help me with fatigue. It helps with my intention tremors and certain weird localized weaknesses, too. Now, I’ve not read any study on MS that supports my own experience, so this may be a perfect example of the “false cause” fallacy, but I swear a cup of coffee works on my arms and legs like a screwdriver on a loose bolt. And once my body’s tightened up, it seems the effect lasts all day. I wonder if this helps the tremors by stiffening surrounding muscles or tendons.

I’m sure there are pharmaceuticals that achieve the same affect. But not as cheaply, and most likely – given my luck with prescription drugs – with much worse side effects than good old Starbucks. I trust one day the latte will take it’s rightful place alongside dark chocolate and red wine.

Right on, Josie! I won't deny that coffee's an addiction, but couldn't you say that oxygen, water, and a warm bed to sleep at night are addictions too?
