Part of a disability-awareness campaign called “Creature Discomforts,”  these ads feature a Claymation-style tortoise, tea-drinking hedgehog, slug (of course it’d be the SLUG that has MS … ) and other animals with disabilities talking about access issues. All with British accents. And looking cute and cuddly, but in a totally edgy “hey, this is serious” way. These ads are smart, witty, engaging and très Brit.

“Creature Discomforts” is based on the UK show “Creature Comforts,” which features similar characters being interviewed on often serious subjects. The British show, in turn, is based on the Oscar-winning short films by the same name, released back in the late ‘80s and created by Wallace and Gromit. These are the guys who brought us, for better or worst, “The Curse of the Were Rabbit.”

As a commentator on disability culture, I probably ought to complain about people with disabilities, so often infantilized, now being depicted as bugs. But they’re really really cute little bugs. And sometimes people need to see everyday issues presented in a radically different way in order to understand them better, so these ads are probably going to be effective.

I’m going to keep checking the website, in case they sell some of these characters as stuffed animals. I have my eye on the dachshund.
