In 2008, I had to have emergency surgery to remove a peri-rectal abcess the size of a grapefruit. After surgery, I had to have a drain tube in for 6 weeks. Once it was removed, I was left with a small scar on my right butt cheek. Fast forward to now: My caregivers have noticed that this scar site has broken down several times in the past 2 years. I have been doing pressure relieving techniques throughout the day (push-ups in my wheelchair, a new wheelchair cushion, etc.). We even tried keep a patch of DuoDerm on the site constantly, but it didn't help much. All the DuoDerm did was caused my bottom to itch constantly. Right now, the site doesn't have skin breakdown, but it is starting to get that telltale itching and a rash over it. The same thing happens everytime it starts to break down. Is there anything I can do to prevent that scar from breaking down constantly? It seems like once we get it healed up, a couple weeks later, its broken down again!
