Alone, we are powerless, ignored, discounted. United, we become a powerful Disability Rights Advocacy campaign. I've read the ADA Regulations pertaining to Handicapped Parking, and they are flawed. The committee that "updated" the ADA Regulations, effective in March, 2011, advertised requests for recommendations from the public, and I responded. My concern was ignored. My statement was something to the effect that I am a Baby Boomer, permanently disabled, mobility impaired, and must use a power wheelchair to get around. I have a van, and use a six-foot tri-fold ramp for offloading my wheelchair. Van Accessible parking is a big stinking lie! I usually have to fight to get one of those parking spaces everytime I leave my home. ADA Regulations allow anyone with Handicapped licensing to park in Van Accessible spaces. Selfish drivers steal Handicapped spaces without fear of consequences. I know that of over three million people over age 15, who have to use wheelchairs, are fighting just as I am to be able to park and offload their wheelchairs! I have complained to police, who have only responded twice to ticket offenders. I have complained to businesses, and churches, that have violators denying me Handicapped Parking access. I have even been forced to file a complaint to the Indiana Civil Rights Commission for help in obtaining a reserved parking space, to offload my wheelchair at the apartment complex where I live. Guess what those fools said? The Judgment is that the apartment management has accommodated me with not one, but two Van Accessible parking spaces. That only served to hurt me more, because everyone parks in those spaces, and I seldom can get in. This proves that the system is flawed and causes people with disabilities to be abused, harassed, and discriminated against so severely, that they are forced to be confined to their homes. We can stop this abuse and get the system changed if we join-in together and demand to be counted! I have formed a new organization which needs Disability Rights Advocates from every state in the USA, to join us and fight for change, by taking this issue to Washington, D.C.! We need You!
