I hope that you get some relief soon.

Did you have an x-rays/MRI or other tests? if so did they highlight anything? Do you have chest pains or other pain which you might think is unrelated?

This is a stab in the dark as I am sure that what i am about to suggest affects multiple areas in a person's upper body ( like the chest) and not just limited to the arm..but Its all I can think of...Has anyone suggested that it might be Thoracic Outlet syndrome?? See here for information. Of course if you have had x-rays etc this may have been explored already..but from what i have read, I think it is often overlooked in some initial work ups. I think you need a Neurologist to look into it..

E.W. Pollak, M.D. states:

"Symptoms and signs of thoracic outlet syndrome are due to the compression or irritation of the neurovascular bundle at the various levels of the cervico-auxillary and thoraco-brachial passages."

It would 'fit' the pain going from one arm to the other and tthe fact that it encompasses the whole arm.

From what I can tell, treatment is usually conservative with analgesia ( non opiates as they aggravte), muscle relaxants, local heat and an excercise program to strenghten the shoulder muscles.

Of course this might be barking up the wrong tree entirely, ( and probably is) but it is what sprung to mind when you mentioned the symptoms switching sides. I hope that this helps, even if only to eliminate something else.

Crutch walking will give you pain like that, the only way to decrease it (for me) is to stop walking on crutches for awhile, and change to a walker or WC.

Hope you feel better soon, Susan.

It sounds a lot like whats been happening to me. At first we thought it might be tennis elbow but that didn't account for the simptoms that started developing I know I have had on going problems with my neck, i.e. arthritis, was having my neck manipulated under general, every 10-20 weeks when the pain was bad, for about 15 years. Any tingling sensations in the neck or down the arm.

Two things I did that stopped the pain:

Get rid of that heavy purse that you put on your shoulder! I was not a believer when the doc told me that but...she was right. She has the same problem and she doesn't even carry a purse. She has a couple of blank checks in her pocket, her DL, one credit card. That's it. I said "but doc, I need to carry some makeup for touch-up" she said keep extra in your desk, in your car, where ever you like but don't carry it in your purse. I said "but doc,...." and her answer to all my "buts" was to keep extra where you need it but get the weight off your shoulder.

Second, I changed the number of pillows I slept with. My shoulder and neck were huring so badly I could barely function. I was going to PT and using all kinds of drugs and it turns out it was my sleeping position. A simple change in your sleeping position could be all that is needed.
