KimberleyB, You summed it up, even the grammar part, much better than I ever could. Thank you!
My concern with these events is that they attract media, and we know what that means. I spend my away-from-home time trying desperately to be as invisible as possible. The less attention I attract the better my day will be.
You think the media would rather do a story on Greg Abbot, Texas Attorney General, and probably Governor someday, that happens to have a SCI and confined to a wheelchair, or a bunch of pathetic crips rolling down the street in a parade? This is NOT the kind of attention we need.

Wow Kim!
That was very well written. You put into words exactly the way I feel. I’m not ashamed of my dis, (although I will admit that I have been embarrassed by it at times), but I’m certainly not proud of it.
It’s just like any other terrible thing that happens. You get up, dust yourself off, examine the damage, make things are right as you can, and move on down the road.
I don’t think black pride, gay pride and disability pride are the same things at all, but that is a discussion for another day.
Thanks Kim for your insightful comment.

LOL Al,
You made your post one minute before I did. I also agree with everything you said. You are absolutely correct about the "attention" part.

Oh, I get it COMPLETELY - I just don't buy it at all.
it what it is
a mutual pityfest
oh, you tried.. good for you..
you've made the critical mistake of thinking that crips need the approval of other crips for existing
I don't need ANYONE's approval of my way of life or my existance and when I network, I do it in a business manner, by NEED not by association.

I can't get into a disability pride parade because I'm just not that proud about my SCI, It has been a nightmare from hell living with it for over 25 years. Plus I hate all the pride parades, who gives a damn if you are Puerto Rican, black, white, gay, Indian, Asian, Irish (like me), or any other kind of person. We do not need to isolate ourselves and I do not believe that these things helps politically. I agree with most of what Kim said anyway. C

I'm in no way ashamed or proud of the disability itself.
I have accepted my disability and have incorporated it into my life; it is a part of me but certainly (exclusively) not who I am.
Because I do not feel marching in a parade gives power or validity to disability issues does not mean I live in a closet. Perhaps there are people who need this type of solidarity to reinforce there worth. For them, this is a good thing. But this is not the only way for people with disabilities to be recognized in order to make a strong statement of their needs.

I love the gay parade!
I think it's a semantic thing @ the pride disabled parade. I'm not proud @ my dis, it's part of who I have become. I do not define myself by my disability, although others may. Should there be a parade focusing on those with disabilities. Why not? Maybe the PR dept. needs a new angle.
I'd be interested in knowing if attendees are primarily born with a disability or BIG advocates...?
On another note. Have fun Susan! I understand the amount of work it must take to organize such an event.

Gay pride is a bunch of baloney. I see no reason for there to be parades or celebrations because of whom someone chooses to have sex with. see what religion does to ppl? linda, as unacceptable much of the world is toward homosexuality, who would choose it?
