To promote the belief in society that Disability is a natural and beautiful part of human diversity in which people living with Disabilities can take pride. I think I'm going to be ill.

Ain't nothing prideful or beautiful about having an eye-catching severe disability.

Yeah, my disability is not "natural" nor "beautiful".
My wheelchair is pretty slick... but I don't consider it beautiful or a natural way to get about in this world. All in all, this natural disability I have is not beautiful...
... celebrate it?
Nawwww...

Nawwww... Well now doesn't this here standard ya'll seem to have (I'm becoming Southern)just clearly contradict all the crapola I received (every time) of past for posting nude or semi-nude gals in their chairs, & how everyone giving me lip about how beautiful they all were. Like the chair and the gimpiness was somethin of "model" material....and should be embraced and with Pride! Yeah...right. again, you people can't begin to hear the hypocritical nature of your ways on this board. Come on now...let's have one big ol' Nude Parade!
btw, susan, I hear what you are saying with your distinction between who we are and what we look like. But I just felt it necessary to display my own  .

Now you are talking. I bet if I give a party with a bunch of cheap hookers for the guys, and a few studs for the girls, I will get more disabled to show and celebrate, than the folks giving a Disability Pride Parade. Ugh! Actually, that ain't a bad idea. Beer, drugs, loud rock and roll, sex, cigars, in a big Las Vegas hotel room.

What we look like is also who we are. If I look in the mirror and hate myself because I don't look like a Victoria's Secret model then I have issues with my physical image and there is no "pride" about that. I understand your view Xuxan about the Disability pride thing. I agree that if we cannot change what we are then we should embrace who we are. I just don't like to parade it.

I'm so glad to hear Corlorde, Al, and Starlight voice what I was thinking.
There is nothing cool, prideful, attractive, fun or in any way positive about this dis. (No not even the parking spaces make it in any way a good thing.)
What the heck is there to be proud of??? Should I be proud I didn't die in the accident I just broke my freekin back? Should I be proud I didn't off myself and choose to get through every day the best I can?
Give me a break. Being physically different and defective is NOTHING to be proud of. It's just something to cope with. Then to parade around so everyone can look at us? Personally I find this whole concept totally confusing somewhat embarrassing and rather distasteful.
Of course everyone should do whatever floats your boat, so I hope you all enjoy yourself and get what you hope for out of your pride event.
To each his own...

No one I know has any "pride" in being disabled, anyone who does imho is the product of a sick and somewhat pathetic mindset.
Pride in thriving despite the disability is ok, proud to be a cripple is another thing entirely.
There is NO crip culture.
Now Xuxan...don't go complaining that I am picking on you again, I seriously think you post this bullshit to raise a ruckus...something to do with being a needy crip (if you call what you have a disability...I call it "wannabe a crip so I have an excuse to complain" syndrome)

Gay pride is a bunch of baloney. I see no reason for there to be parades or celebrations because of whom someone chooses to have sex with. If you want to do celebrate that kind of thing, there should be parades for Monogamous Heterosexuals, Swingers, Mistresses, etc. etc....

I would like ta go ta Chicago & be a part of it....I think that the NCIL conference is more important because we can talk with senators & see where they "sit" on different bills that have to do with the disabled but this proud to be dis IS better then saying that U are ashamed of being disabled. It's like saying that "black is beautiful" or something like that. It is just rejoyousing in the fact that U are not ashamed of being disabled,,I think. Years ago,,, ppl WERE ashamed of thier disablity! I think we have come a long way in our thinking of ourselves. I am glad that we aren't hid away like our 1800-early 1900 counter parts....we should be proud of the way thoughts of the disabled HAVE changed. I am proud of not being ashamed of my dis! & so should U be. Am I making sense to ya? It's late & I am tired. ,,,joe..

"Gay pride"?,,,,,same as "black pride",,,or red pride or dis pride or Italian pride.....same thing! Ask an Indian if he/she is proud to be an Indian. 9 out of 10 would say yes,,,,I bet! If U ever knew an Italian, U know that they are proud to be "Italian stalions". Irish are proud ta be Irish.....same difference,,huh? ,,,joe..

The parade is not about celebrating how beautiful we are, but who we are - what we've accomplished and what we dream - and networking with people to make our dreams happen! It would only serve to reinforce my belief that I am absolutely kickass in spite of my disability and it would also confirm my belief that my own path is the best one.
I do think there is a crip culture, but it certainly isn't based on pride in any fashion, it stems from common experiences and an essentially common goal of access and inclusion. It's an activism culture that would disintigrate the second our goal was accomplished since those of us who are SANE didn't choose this life.
The disability pride movement and concept is laughable in my mind since it celebrates a ridiculous position.
I'm proud of my disability? uh huh.. I'm proud of punctuation too! GO COMMAS, THAT'S THE WAY TO DO IT APOSTROPHE!!
and the only reason I would go to a disability pride parade is to point and laugh at those in the parade since they're obviously there for our entertainment.
Pride is related to success for EFFORT and/or results. It's also a third party emotion. We're proud of our children and the children of others. I'm proud of my friends boys - they both won the local snowboarding competition in their age groups. I'm proud of another friend for keeping to his plan of not drinking for 3 months, even though his life right now is getting crazy. I'm proud of the Special Olympics golfers who came out yesterday and SOUNDLY beat the rest of us - not to mention the junior golfers with great swings - the result of EFFORT - practicing, working toward a goal and accomplishing it.
Pride in a CIRCUMSTANCE is for the useless, shallow and unsophisticated and/or insane..
I make my dreams happen by WORKING at them - after I plan them.. plan the work, work the plan
I do NOT hate what I see. I see myself. Why would I hate myself because of my disability? That is something someone ELSE would feel. Why would ANYONE hate themselves for having a disability?
I HATE my disability, I would change it in a second, I would change EVERYONE's if they wanted it, but I'm in no way ashamed or proud of the disability itself.
It is what it is and no amount of parading around screaming for rights will ever change society. And frankly, I think it's kind of pathetic and it will be nothing more than a gawkfest.
MOST of the SUCCESSFUL crips I know (from quads with vents to amputees) have done what was needed, moved the disability to the chore list and put the success on a personal level where it belongs.
So, in short.. ahahhahhahhaaa.. I will not be attending.
