seriously, you're quite courageous to do this. it does take guts. i'm proud of you dowdy and of course i hope the procedures help a lot.

Posts: 3344 		Its not that the surgery hasnt been done before. It has been done before the problem is that it hasn't been done on a choreo athetotic/dystonic CP before. My particular type of cp is rare so this will be experimental, they willhave to use dopamine supressents all of which have side effects some are highly addictive and valium.

They have been doing those anterior cervical disc surgeries for many many years. I've never known of anyone dying or even getting worse after one...most people have really good results.

Hope you are much improved after the procedure.

Is it weird writing to someone who refuses to come here any more and won't be reading all these posts???

Just have a good mind set Dowdy and I could see that operating on a person with CP could make things more complicated. Just know a lot of people are thinking of you and I'm sure this series of surgery will bring some relief.

Loc: Desolation Row 		In defense of Dowdy: It's damned hard being a freak of nature, is all. It can get to you after awhile. Not meant to whine, but it's just a fact.

Surgery, pain, aggravation, just puts it all in stark relief... we don't adhere to any of the usual categories. Medically speaking, they don't know what to do with us; they are basically just guessing, and we are well aware of that. It makes you feel like a guinea pig.

Surgery is a hot button for almost everyone with CP--very emotionally charged. Many CPers were promised (as children) that surgery would "cure" us --or at least make us "better" in some nebulous and never-defined way. They said it to make us behave. And of course, they lied--there was no cure, and "better" was always a matter of opinion. (I am very grateful my mother was always honest with me, but doctors were not.)

Surgery has been hell ever since, a reminder that the way one first entered the world was never "good enough".

People with "acquired" disabilities are not considered freaks. It's nothing personal, but I think it's a whole 'nother mindset.

flicka, i think that dowdy's primary fear might be from the drugs that will be administered to him in order to keep him still for the six weeks following his surgery, and possibly for the rest of his life- he might become addicted to these zombie-like medications, resulting in a loss of self- the fusion itself seems to be a secondary fear-

I mentioned this surgery (keeping an athetoid person in a coma) on a CP listserv; it's pretty controversial. It's no wonder he is afraid, but I have to say, I don't know what else he should do, at this point.

Well, it upset me when Merry said it; I knew I couldn't be the cause of ALL the fighting.

I waited until I could be sure of this before saying so; arguing DOES continue in my absence.

What it has to do with Dowdy, is that he would suggest this is due to who I am. Similar behavior is tolerated by the in-group, and that's okay. (Some animals are more equal than others.) Moderation is only the most obvious recent example.

I used to doubt Philip about this and tried to argue him out of it; I no longer do.

There is always hope, please remember that. No matter what the MDs say, they don't know everything, and plenty of folks recover beautifully when they were offered very little hope at all. I've seen lots here at rehab, and hope the same happens for Sam at some point, though what we have so far is miracle enough.

We go home tomorrow. After 7 months, I honestly had began to wonder if we ever would. Please let us know how you are doing..and that you're recovering .
