I agree Xuxan. What about families that aren't silly spenders? Families paying daycare, helping to support elderly parents, with student loans.... Not all families with money problems got there shopping and eating takeout off of paper plates.
I've enjoyed the series, turns out our family isn't living as lean as we thought we were. It pointed out where we can cut back a bit, not nearly as much as the families on the show but every little bit counts.

I was laughing about this yesterday. Watching Oprah lecture on how to budget ones finances is kinda like watching Oprah lecture on what it is like to be a Chinese person living in the US.

So far the most important thing I learned I learned too late. Don't close your credit cards when you pay them off. Just don't use them. It looks good to have a credit card with a zero balance. When you get the next one down to zero - then close that one off you have had down to zero for awhile.
But not too late I learned, that if you maintain perfect credit with a card for two years - you have maxed out the benefit it will do for your credit. So if you need to improve the score - after 2 years close it and get a new one and the 2 years starts all over again with the new card.
I'm all for Oprah's Debt Diet, but I wish she had people on who actually were having a hard time making ends meet because their incomes were low - not just becauee they were completely irresponsible with money.

Some of the most wealthy people live like paupers. Crazy, huh? They sweat over spending a penny.
The people who love money the most can't really enjoy it. People who have lots of money and couldn't care less about it get everything they want but don't enjoy it either. Most of their lives are totally miserable.
I think some who share their wealth with the less fortunate are probably the happiest. Wasn't there a multi billionaire who just gave away most of his wealth the other day to the less fortunate. Man I'll bet he is a happy at peace with himself guy.
I am happy with what I have but I would probably be happier if I tried to share more with those who have less. Trouble is most people have more than I've got! Oprah just tryin ta help, y'all!

I didn't get the impression she was lecturing people on how they spent their money, to me it was making them realise they were were going to be bankrupt sooner than later if they didn't face reality.

Oprah is a star. She's good at what she does and people tune in to what she is... Damn straight in my book.

Heh...I'm not saying she doesn't deserve it, she has worked hard for her money. I'm just saying, having a show dedicated to lecturing us on how to save money by cutting back is rather ludicrous.

Believe it or not, I've never seen the Oprah show. I just don't do TV. I heard Dr. Phil on the radio once and he didn't really impress me. I can't figure out why so many folks are gaga over him.
As for the "debt diet" (I had to google that because I hadn't a clue as to what you all were talking about); it seems that some of the folks on it have bigger issues than money (one in particular seems to have some major marital problems). But there is some good advice from the financial experts there. Maybe it will help some people.

The impression I got from the show was that it was basically a shill for the banks and credit card companies -- how to borrow money "wisely" so you can qualify to borrow more so you can stay in debt for the rest of your life.
I prefer Dave Ramsey's approach: get out of debt and stay that way by not borrowing. As he has pointed out repeatedly, the Bible says that the borrower is slave to the lender. Maybe that is why one major credit card company calls itself MasterCard.

The show is aired over about 300 radio stations across the country, Sirius and XM satellite, and also available free as a webcast. There were a number of horror stories on the tactics lenders use on the show today.
I was a bit reluctant to try Dave's approach until I added up what I was paying out in interest to the bloodsuckers every month and decided there were better things I could do with my money than lining their pockets.
