I know he doesn't care, but for what it's worth: I hope Steve gets better. I have prayed for him many, many times; even started a novena on his surgery date.
I want everything good to start happening for him.

I imagine they did some debreading of the wound and took it down to fresh clean tissue with good blood suply to promote faster healing so they can flap the wound and be guranteed healthy tissue to work with.
