I am 51 and have been paralyzed for 28 years. I wonder what kind of life expectancy can a paralyzed wheelchair user expect. What do the actuary tables suggest? Anyone here older and been wheelchair bound longer than me?

I was told years ago that statistically a person with a spinal cord injury can live 40 years after their injury. Personally I think that is BS. Look at Jill Kinmont she was injured while competing in the giant slalom at the prestigious Snow Cup in Alta, Utah, on January 30, 1955. She was the reigning national champion in the slalom, and a top prospect for a medal at the 1956 Winter Olympics. After her injury she lived for 57 yrs. as a quadriplegic. Unfortunately she passed away on Feb 9, 2012 at age 75. I think it has to do with how well you take car of yourself or in her case how well she was taken care of, and also when it is your time to go. At least that's my thoughts on it. I too have been in a chair for a very long time. I became a paraplegic at 17 on June 23, 1979 so I'm going on 34yrs now.
