Sorry to say this but on my first trip to the USA last December, I was amazed at the amount of persons using mobility devices. My first impression was this is a country that takes care of its pwd's, and take special care to include them in all social activities. I quickly realized, however that a fair amount were using mobility devices because they were too overweight. I have never seen this in other countries.
Was your trip just within the state of Florida? Because if so that might explain a lot.

Florida is the retirement haven of North America. Older Canadians flock there during winter months (called "snowbirds"). Florida is the place where the old go to die so it isn't a suprise that mobility aids are more visible there. Us, "true northeners" are just set adrift on an ice flow when our time is up.

Sorry Deo, In no way was my comment directed at you. Your posts have been quit insightful. My post was directed at the Canadians who love to point fingers south of the border to tell us how wrong we live. I can live with constructive criticism, but as you can tell from this threads title........ Its far from that.

Although we have specifically discussed Canada, Mexico and the U.S. as separate entities in this thread, it seems only the U.S. gets to hold the title of "Americans"? I'm cool with that and am generally proud to be called by the title.

I hear you bh. I am from a developing nation with conservative values. Here once you are disabled, people expect you to stay home and die, so disabled persons are not very visible.
What you don't see here often is three generations out together in social activities as is commonplace in the US. Old people here are also expected to stay home and die also.
