As far I looked they don't seem like homes for the disabled but homes for people that have disabled family members. Putting in a shower hardly makes a home accessible I didn't see a lowered kitchen sink in any of the pic I looked at. They would be nice if you have someone taking care of you but for independent living, not so much. But then I didn't look at all of them.

I've been an apt dweller all my life and lived in a small handful of what was advertised as accessible housing. Not one had a lowered kitchen sink. I've seen my first lowered sink in the bathroom of the newly remodeled Walmart and I mention it sometimes, in thanks, when I go there.

" they.... seem like homes for people that have disabled family members."

Different strokes for different folks.

Is it that you just don't like the name of the website advertised as accessible properties? I don't think that is misleading but then, I'm an odd duck. I know that when I pick up a rental magazine that those advertised as accessible places are just going to have to be checked out by me myself and I to know whether it is for sure or not. Most times (no, all the time) it doesn't come close to what I'd really like.

the one closest to me didn't have a ramp to the front door...and there was no picture of the back...but it did mention a capper bathroom.

the site lists properties with access features that include being able to get in the door and navigate the main floor. There are a few that are ridiculously accessible, but they have the matching price tag.

As for accessible, that means something different to everyone, that's why I list the actual features in each listing - until there is an actual residential access standard, we're getting them in bits and pieces.

I get them to upload as many relevant pictures as I can so people can see how close it is to their needs and maybe consider renovation or decide it's not suitable.

I absolutely promise all the houses I actually build will be fall over and freak out accessible

Sorry I didn't mean to imply the name was wrong or that they weren't worthwhile. I just think there should be some homes for thr independent living crip. Not everyone lives with a caregiver. They just look like a place for aunt martha after she brakes a hip. She won't need to go into the rest of the house or fix her own food.and apparently she can't get out side without help.

I think the houses are very nice but not homes for the disabled, they are homes for the disabled caregiver

What does "There are a few that are ridiculously accessible," mean?

Does that mean Access to all rooms? Or to all cabinets? Or doing your own laundry? Or a sink you can brush your own teeth in.

I'm sorry I seem a little mean. I just don't think puting in a shower in place of a tub should alow a contractor to get the construction price of the home subsidised.

you are a little mean - I've never met you. and you have not looked at all the listings or you wouldn't have posted what you did.

and yes and yes and yes and yes

I have no idea what you mean about construction price being subsidized.

Well, putting in a shower and level entryways made the house I designed and built accessible for me. I could have put in many more access features, but I plan on selling the place. Overly modified = a very small group of buyers, reducing the asking price or expensive renovations prior to selling.

Kim's listings reflect real world access features you will find if you are lucky when looking for a house. I appreciate the convince of having the listings in one place rather than having to search for homes with access features when many of the search engines do not even have that option.

Kimberley I am a little confused as to what you are selling. All of those places could be remodeled into homes for disabled people.

I'm a strong c7 quad and in the one house I was able to build freely from restraints within reason.
So I started with the bathroom where I built a 12' by 12' room with tile going up the walls 6' with a commercial sink that stuck out 4' from the wall.
I put two drains in that room one in the middle of the room and one in the shower.
It had a high boy water closet/toilet

From there was the dressing area with 2 more sinks one so I could roll under and brush teeth, etc it also had a big a walk in closet.
Then into the bedroom it was just roomy nothing speciel.

The only other thing was the kitchen because I do cook. I was able to roll under both cooktop and cabinet top counters. The oven was at wheelchair height as was the dishwasher. The kitchen was 15'x20' so it took up a lot of room.

That's about it, all I needed was a few other things like a sidewalk around the house etc. I had an under roof porch which is very preferred in Florida.

To me that is a home for the disabled not just because it worked for me but many dis homes and places I have rented I have noticed the same changes I did to that one place.

Now I am broke and lookin for a house I have looked at 25 to 30 homes so I hope the house we are fighting for comes through on the 20th.

Don't short sell your self short Curt, cut it up, tear it down, ...lol. I agree with U. BUT you can get away with things. My wife loves a higher dish washers because she bends less. AB'S are always trying to take use of things we have fighted for.

Peace

I provide listing space for homes that have accessibility features.

I agree completely some could be remodeled even more. I suggest that to people who ask all the time.

I also remodeled my condo to be accessible to ME - I'm sure other people with different access needs would find it useless because I had to work with the space I had - 400 sq ft that included the bathroom, kitchen/dining and living room ☺ so I built a little roll under counter and all my lower cabinets were drawers and cubbyholes - all my ab friends HATED it because they had to bend to reach anything.. I can't wait to be somewhere like that again

the main floor yes - the bedroom was a loft - I scooted up and down on my butt

It was TIGHT - I had a galley style kitchen and it was so tight I had to carve out pieces of the drywall to fit the cupboards in. I used upper cabinets for my lowers because they were just a bit shorter, got a one piece corian counter with integrated corner sink and put drawers in as many cupboards as I could - then on the other side I built in a really shallow (about 15 inches deep) self designed hutch using two upper cabinets set 3 feet apart with another custom corian counter spanning them so I could roll under it - I put even shallower glass front cabinets at the far ends with hooks and plate racks for my dishes and used the bottom ones for all my baking supplies. It was PERFECT for me everyone else hated it because they had to bend to find things, but I didn't care at all.

The bathroom was fun too - my condo was an old hotel room - so it had hotel style separated sink / bath - I ripped that out COMPLTELEY, put in a pull chain toilet, a claw foot slipper tub (yes I know it's not accessible but it was so big it was like a pool in my house) and an old fashioned rack stand for the sink.

I really miss it - but it was the condo where they kept taking away the access features and upping my fees - so I had to go
