Seems very difficult if not impossible to talk about religion without someone getting all upset. Do people really think you're attacking their faith just by openly asking questions or giving differing opinions on things?
I would think if your beliefs are strong enough you wouldn't feel threatened by someone who happens to disagree, but the hostility always seems to come out anyway. History shows that people have been killing each other over religious disagreements nearly since time began.
Even though most religions have some version of "love thy neighbor" at their core, visceral hatred of those who follow a different faith seems to be sadly very common. What is there about religion that brings this out?

Hmm, I read the article through and just don't see how it has the slightest relevance to the question I posed. If you want to discuss this subject instead, why not start a new thread instead of creating thread drift by going off on a tangent?
As far as the article goes, CNS is FAR from a credible source since their writings all have a deliberate and inflammatory extreme right-wing slant. Did you notice that they only quoted sources from one side of the issue and made no attempt to even talk to anyone from the administration?
I'd guess that all hospitals, clinics, etc. owned, operated, and funded by the church will automatically be exempted from this rule and it's likely a tempest in a teapot. Obama isn't stupid enough to alienate all the Catholics in the country over an administrative rule.

Obama had to really be hurting when he turned away from his church for to take a place in the White House. And in all that time that he Was a member of his church...what was he? Did he ever say what his beliefs were that we could even possibly get a grasp on where he was coming from? anything?
Now, I've read some extremely left wacko sites as reference from the left posters' posts of the boards. But that isn't/wasn't mentioned by the right as a tactic to disengage in conversation/debate...hardly ever has been done and it certainly hasn't ever been sometning acknowledged By any lefties to a left or liberal poster who references their wacko sites.
I did rather appreciate snopes.com as mentioned by gimpy to me over there on your fav board when i posted my (yes) email on what Americans are TIRED of in our country. I knew it already...but it really didn't make for much difference in how I 'felt' about what I posted...so I posted it.
Try REally sticking your neck out once in a while. It feels sooooo good. Helps ya to just be able to say: Yeah, I know who I am.
Ok, now, personally, I spent the weekend before this being party to how the Catholic church in the area I live was UPSET...the ministry was about how over the next few weeks the pastors/bishops/whatever will be engaged in scouring their Bibles so as to arm themselves with the very BELIEFS they live by, love...and more importantly FEEL AMERICAN about...you know, those simple rights we All hope to keep...unless we elect for another 4 years of O.
So....my post wasn't JUST about what I can find on the net to distract you, ghoti. These little posting windows are much too small for ANY of us to fully get a grasp on each other's ways. I DO watch reaction and behavior of liberals (or anyone) and might say that they are hypocritical to say something bad about another when they do it themselves. BUT, I also fully recognize that these are silly messageboards and I don't know anyone in their real life...whether they are a hypocrite or not is not anything I could know. On the board...get it...is diffferent thing. I only know what I see/observe.
ga nite

I believe, after all these years of reading the same posters (those who are still somewhat around) that it is quite easy to recognize one whose interest in the Bible is motivated by hostility, not honest investigation of the Bible and a willingness to dig further vs one who simply wants to share Bible verse and talk about it. When you recognize that, then you either just ignore and move on or maybe after so many times of ignoring it you take a stand that Then sounds rather strong to the opposition. And that's called 'not lying down like a rug to be walked all over time and again." Having a real love for the Bible, too, is different than just wanting to take swipes at what is written in it for the fun of it. And It isn't all black and white nor can you summarize the Old from the New as being two completely separate splits, that is...If you really dig into it, thoroughly. Some feel that they know the Bible in it's entirety. I know it possible to memorize it...but to know it? All? please tell me noone thinks that. At least one thing could be agreed upon. Yet, that is what I have read on the board!
ga nite, again. sorry to have come back in one evening like this when I thought I had finished my thought.

Ronda, what you seem to be implying is that you're willing to discuss religion and the Bible, but only with people who believe as you do. If that's the case then this is a poor place for you to be involved in religious discussions.
From talking with various posters here over the years I know that folks here have a very wide variety of beliefs ranging from strong fundamentalist Christians, catholics, Mormons, a Bubbhist or two, a wide selection of Protestant Christians of varying degree, at least one Wiccan a few years back, some agnostics, some atheists, and some people who were unaligned but seriously seeking answers about spirituality. We've probably had some Muslims looking in but I don't recall any of them ever posting.
For some reason you seem to expect that a forum called "faith and religion" should be reserved solely for people who share your beliefs, but that's just unrealistic. IMO this is a place that should be open to everyone, regardless of beliefs.
If you really can't tolerate talking with those of differing beliefs then I'd recommend you look into one of the many discussion boards reserved for Christians exclusively, although from what I've seen of them there's a lot of arguing over subtleties of doctrine even there.

You know Ghoti, I have been on several of those christian forums and boy does the fur fly there sometimes. I somehow don't feel comfortable on those boards. There are so many differing points of view and if you disagree on any point you can start a verbal war sometimes. Many of those boards make my fundamentalism look like I'm a very loose Unitarian or something. Some people are full of anger. If I were to bring up my views on Gay people on those boards I would go down in flames. There are so great a number of wicked so called religious christians in this world who think they are just a step away from heaven. There is going to be crowds of them turned away from the doors of heaven by Jesus Himself. Paul
