I was wondering how others deal with spasms. I am a T6 para since 1982 and have noticed that my spasms have become quite bad in the last two years. I am fed up with them fighting me and am tired of waking up at night and my legs are all twisted together. I have been taking Baclofen and have upped my dose only to find that it makes me spacey and don't help ease the intensity. I have tried muscle relaxers which totally knock me out. I was looking at the Baclofen pump but that looks like something that I don't know if I really want to try. I am not crazy about having that thing implanted in me. I am seeing a neurosurgeon in a few weeks for a follow up appointment and am going to pick his brain on doing a Baclofen trial to see if the pump would work. I know the spasms are benefical to me, but they are dragging me down both physically and mentally.

I am post-polio and don't have spasms so I can't answer from personal experience. However, when I was in rehab in the late 1960's, the preferred treatment for most of the SCI's I knew was Valium (Vallium?). Unfortunately, in spite of the theory that it wasn't addictive, it turned out to be for many of them. Maybe you could take it only at night to prevent the leg twists and the "knockout" effect would be gone by morning.

I knew one person for whom drugs did not work and he chose to have surgery. Shortly after the surgery, he developed pressure sores. It was his theory that the spasms had helped prevent the sores. Be sure to discuss that possibility with your doctor before doing anything drastic.

I hope this info helped.

I have bad spasams, have been for a long time. Baclofen has never worked for me. My Dr has tried every concotion we could come up with. Now I take Hydrocodone, oxicontin, and diasapame-valium. I take oxycontin, 20mgs 3 times a day, morning, afternoon, around 5, and another at bedtime, I use the hydrocodone for breakout pain or just to kick the spasams, 3 a day as needed, and when I feel the pain that trigers the spasams I take 2 diasapame. It seems that pain or cold will trigger my spasams. The pain starts in my legs and feet, It starts as stinging the it is pure hell. I have kicked tables over and now I have pulled a muscle in my knee. I would be interested in what triggers you spasams, how do they start, Thanks I keep thinking it will get better and you never know. good luck guys
