we sued my dad's doctor--who was beautiful old man who still made house-calls to the elderly; because the doc was in his late 80s and had dementia. we had a petite-jury (6), who said they voted on his behalf (his son stood in for him because his dementia had advance by the time we went to trial) because we didn't take or talk my dad into seeing another dr since he had so many complaints of feeling unwell for more than a year --which made sense. we should have had sued the doc's colleagues, who should have seen he was slipping.

Your family sounds about as lawsuit happy as my family. Money just can never replace a person's life...

JB,it's not a full benefit. For disabled who became dis before 22 it's 75% of the parent's. I don't know for sure if I still get anything from that since I worked and was not considered dis by SSA during that time. I don't know how or if my check's broken down.

Around here, it is you who are "veiled".

I went to your website and am curious. You seem to have a problem with the word "handicapped" yet embrace the term "disabled". By definition I must wonder...where is there a difference?

-----
ParaDude, the label "handicapped" is quickly being changed, from referring to people with disabilities (PWD'S). Didn't you know this? It's all over the ADA (American's with Disabilities Act) website, the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), and most any publications coming from our nation's Capital! I have bookmarks and pamphlets which guide society in how to address and interact with PWD's. Would you like for me to send you a copy? Yes, I am unknown on Newmobility's website, because I am new here. On Facebook and the AAEPHA website, I am well-established in my own name! kimberlyb gave one good constructive criticism about my "tone," and I certainly appreciate that!

Overcomer, being changed is hardly accurate. The PC police did that long ago. I prefer gimp or crip, but "they" decided I can't address myself that way.

I'd love to see the pamphlet on how to interact with cripples. Written by some terminally constipated TAB most likely.

You didn't address my actual question Overcomer. Frankly, I don't really care about the ADA as I'm not a USian. I'm not PC either and could really care less what people call me.

I was curious though about the two words, "disabled", and "handicapped" and why YOU (not the ADA) thinks one is better/worse than the other.

I'm no English major or anything like that but my personal definitions of the two terms are:

Disabled: rendered inoperative, stopped, ceases to work.

Handicapped: a disadvantage apart from the norm.

You tell me which one describes us more accurately.

As stated above, I don't really care one way or another but it seems you do, and I wonder...why?

ETA - and no, I don't need any pamphlets on how to interact with people like myself. Frankly, such a thing seems hardly necessary given that EVERY ONE OF US is an individual and hardly a "category" of people who can all be addressed using the same handbook.

P.S. Your condescending tone is not necessary.

overcomer - you did not get my attention in a good way but more like an errant child throwing a tantrum needs to be given a time out.

Those of us who DO actually work to make changes are constantly having to UNDO the damage people like you cause with the agitation and ignorance you are spreading - BEFORE we can get back to the real work of making changes.

And I would actually LOVE a copy of any guide written on how to interact with me. I'm sure it would be very... informative - especially considering how many I know in real life.. it would make my day go a whole lot easier if I just knew the right (and government approved) way to deal with them.. damn cripples..

and wearing chaps no less.. but if my ass was as cute as Rob's I probably would too..

I do admit to not always being so respectful while driving a car. Since having to go to a van last year I have become much more aware of how the few van accessible places seem to be the first taken. This is to be expected given that they are usually closest to the entrance of whatever building the parking lot serves, and most ppl using handicapped parking are ambulatory. A kindly worded request to your fellow gimps to please use the van spaces as a last resort would be much more effective.

On the other hand, the lazy jackass TAB who takes that van space so he can "run into the store" for a minute, well, there ought to be a year around open season on those fools! I kid sorta. Legitimate users are not the problem. Doctors who hand out the permits for hang nails are. I can go months without seeing another gimp out in public, yet every time I go to the store most of the blue spaces are taken. Yeah there are unseen disabilities, and they need the parking as much or more than we do, but I contend the desire to use the parking came before the "disability" in a huge number of those cases. As I often say: parking lots must be the leading cause of disability in this country.

I've advocated for 2 areas for handicapped parking for years. One close to entrances and the other at the far end of the lot. Bet those far from the store always will have a vacant space. Yeah, it will be a bit more dangerous rolling the length of the lot, but at least you'll be able to park.

I agree that there should be two types of handicapped parking.

1) For those that have trouble walking but do NOT use a wheelchair. (which in my observation is about 90% of those parking there) These spots should be close and don't need to be the wide spots.

2) For those that actully use wheelchairs. These are the wide spots so you can get the chair in and out of the car. These spots don't need to be as close. And anybody parking in these spots that is not useing a wheelchair would be ticketed.
