Alone, we are powerless, ignored, discounted. United, we become a powerful Disability Rights Advocacy campaign. I've read the ADA Regulations pertaining to Handicapped Parking, and they are flawed. The committee that "updated" the ADA Regulations, effective in March, 2011, advertised requests for recommendations from the public, and I responded. My concern was ignored. My statement was something to the effect that I am a Baby Boomer, permanently disabled, mobility impaired, and must use a power wheelchair to get around. I have a van, and use a six-foot tri-fold ramp for offloading my wheelchair. Van Accessible parking is a big stinking lie! I usually have to fight to get one of those parking spaces everytime I leave my home. ADA Regulations allow anyone with Handicapped licensing to park in Van Accessible spaces. Selfish drivers steal Handicapped spaces without fear of consequences. I know that of over three million people over age 15, who have to use wheelchairs, are fighting just as I am to be able to park and offload their wheelchairs! I have complained to police, who have only responded twice to ticket offenders. I have complained to businesses, and churches, that have violators denying me Handicapped Parking access. I have even been forced to file a complaint to the Indiana Civil Rights Commission for help in obtaining a reserved parking space, to offload my wheelchair at the apartment complex where I live. Guess what those fools said? The Judgment is that the apartment management has accommodated me with not one, but two Van Accessible parking spaces. That only served to hurt me more, because everyone parks in those spaces, and I seldom can get in. This proves that the system is flawed and causes people with disabilities to be abused, harassed, and discriminated against so severely, that they are forced to be confined to their homes. We can stop this abuse and get the system changed if we join-in together and demand to be counted! I have formed a new organization which needs Disability Rights Advocates from every state in the USA, to join us and fight for change, by taking this issue to Washington, D.C.! We need You! Actually - your plan to combine will result in more division amongst the groups. Using your plan, if there is only a van accessible space left then I can't park when I am actually there, just to be sure it's there IN CASE someone else shows up.

Why do I have to give up MY immediate need and right to park to accommodate your potential needs when you're not even there?

Also - your tone, your name calling and your outdated and frankly, low level agitating language that only serves to get people's back up are very likely a main reason people don't listen to you.

If you call someone a fool, I can't imagine why they'd want to help you at all. Especially when they do not have the authority to do so.

No one is being abused or harassed because of a lack of van accessible spaces. They may be inconvenienced, but abuse and harassment are active actions that are intended to hurt you - not being convenient is not abuse. The overkill and hysterical tone of your post causes more damage than good.

IMO

I too agree with Kim and Paul up to a point. Provided wheelers in cars respect the needs of van users by only using van space when the others are full as Kim said. I do admit to not always being so respectful while driving a car. Since having to go to a van last year I have become much more aware of how the few van accessible places seem to be the first taken. This is to be expected given that they are usually closest to the entrance of whatever building the parking lot serves, and most ppl using handicapped parking are ambulatory. A kindly worded request to your fellow gimps to please use the van spaces as a last resort would be much more effective.

On the other hand, the lazy jackass TAB who takes that van space so he can "run into the store" for a minute, well, there ought to be a year around open season on those fools! I kid sorta. Legitimate users are not the problem. Doctors who hand out the permits for hang nails are. I can go months without seeing another gimp out in public, yet every time I go to the store most of the blue spaces are taken. Yeah there are unseen disabilities, and they need the parking as much or more than we do, but I contend the desire to use the parking came before the "disability" in a huge number of those cases. As I often say: parking lots must be the leading cause of disability in this country.

I've advocated for 2 areas for handicapped parking for years. One close to entrances and the other at the far end of the lot. Bet those far from the store always will have a vacant space. Yeah, it will be a bit more dangerous rolling the length of the lot, but at least you'll be able to park.

i wrote a pass plan. i got two socials, mine and my dad's, and because i work, i get to keep the surplus and my wages. ss put me on supplemental. i'm supposed to live off the supplemental and half my wages; the other half goes into my pass plan w/the socials, and the pass was approved in april '09. so i got retro like 7k when i picked the van up in april '10. pass money is a lot but i can only use for the van (payments, insurance gas etc), but it's over 1600. per months. when the pass ends after van's paid for, i'll keep just my wages and socials.

i hope i can afford the insurance, gas, food and soon rent, when the pp ends!

@Kimberleyb: My apologies for the delay in responding, but I found no way to subscribe for notification of responses. At least one Van Accessible space should be available for about every 50 spaces, to accommodate offloading vans WHENEVER they are needed. PWD's who have to offload wheelchairs cannot park in a regular-sized space and are penalized when they are forced to create enough space by taking two regular parking spaces to have enough room. My tone reflects my desperate appeal for relief from documented abuse, harassment, and discrimination which I have continually experienced. Your definitions are faulty, because abuse, harassment, and discrimination are often the result of negligence as well. Yes, my tone could be more calm, but I got your attention, didn't I? Your opinion about my style or vocabulary is just that--yours. I could not care less! You appear to be enjoying the privilege of posting insults while veiled with anonymity. The name-calling/insult directed toward an agency tasked with the job of protecting civil rights of residents in my state is warranted, because the wording in the Judgment contained two lies. The Judgment proves that the investigator failed to do her job.

Kimberley B is far from anonymous and I'll bet every nickel I have that she has done as much, if not more than you could hope to do as far as furthering the rights of people with disabilities.

Around here, it is you who are "veiled".

I went to your website and am curious. You seem to have a problem with the word "handicapped" yet embrace the term "disabled". By definition I must wonder...where is there a difference?
