So my question is? What are your methods for DIY bowel prep for surgery??

I am an L4/L5 para from Spina Bifida....
i may have to do bowel prep for surgery. (hopefully not, since I've never had to do it for this surgery (bladder stones) before, but it's a new surgeon. So will see...but I digress...

Anyway, I can't drink the magnesium Citrate or golytly because I instantly puke it up (sorry for being gross). This is not a theory or a fear. It's a proven reality. I am also supposed to do an ennema which will never happen because my rectal muscles are completely paralysed and I've been there and "tried that" many many times as a kid. Never was successful and was always a disaster.

Background info that may be pertinent: I currently manage my bowels by eating/not eating certain foods as well as a hot shower to relax my muscles and I manually stimulate to eliminate my bowels. I keep myself slightly constipated on purpose to avoid accidents. So I know there's fecal matter in there that can come out prior to surgery. And my own plan would be to eat the foods that I know make me "go like crazy" and then get on clears the day before surgery. That's the best this surgeon's gonna get from me unfortunately. I've tried all the other "bowel" programs and no other program has worked for me like the one I'm on. Still suggetsions and ideas are welcome. Also opinions on my method are also welcome. please help! Thank you!

I suggest that you talk about your concerns with the surgeon well in advance of your scheduled surgery. I don't think that pre-surgical bowel prep is something that you should try to do all by yourself.

I am sure that you are not the first patient who required some modification to the standard bowel prep, and I would bet that the surgeon and/or the nurses could come up with some protocol that would work for you and get your bowels ready for the surgery in a safe and reliable way.

I agree with anita but wanted to add that, like you, I have problems with the liquid magnesium citrate, but have no trouble with magnesium citrate capsules. You may be able to get them locally. Ask your pharmacist if you want to experiment. I get mine at

I keep a supply on hand for occasional constipation since I find it much less objectionable than milk of magnesia.

Bowel prep is no fun no matter how you go about it. Ask for the pills instead of the magnesium citrate or golightly (whatever-stuff).

This surgery is for a bladder stones?

I have had bladder stones taken out before myself twice and have never had to clean my bowel.I don't know why you were told that from anyone.Taking out the bladder stones just involves you having to not drink anything before and the doctor just goes in with a lazer and breaks them up.After they knock you out of course.

Nothing to it.

I am sure you have already had the surgery by now but I sure hope you didn't have to clean your bowel before the surgery for nothing.
