Also, I doubt if there were too many police men on the force seventy years ago who would have used such brutality on a suspected thief.

Sharia law? where did you get that from? looks like a case of excessive force. the police probably had their reasons but I'd bet it had nothin to do with applying Sharia law standards. cops have been busting heads for years, the advent of personal video is now allowing more to get caught "in the act."
