I work as a caregiver for a quad. He is going on vacation and I am going along to help him out. He hasn't picked the location yet, but he's looking into a cruise. Since there is an age gap between us and he is traveling with friends we probably won't be spending the whole day together. Most of the help he needs is scheduled time in the morning and night. However...if he needs soemthing during the day...how can he get ahold of me? Cell phones don't work on a cruise ship, and I'm not going to sit in the room all day just in case.

Is there such a thing as a pager that you don't have to call? Kind of like a walkie talkie where it is independent from other things? You push a button and it pages the other person? Or any other ideas of how we can communicate? We might end up traveling to Mexico instead, and this would be helpful there too instead of relying only on cell phones.

Thanks!

Cell phones do work in other countries. I've talked by cell on our local numbers to my lady in Bangkok, Bali and Jakarta all this last week. Aboard a steel ship I suppose there could be problems.
Sounds like a pow wow on who's responsible when on a daily basis and a system for making those arrangements is needed.

Just a quick update...I talked to my cell phone provider ahead of time and got information about rates for the two locations we were stopping at as well as onboard the ship. Turns out one of the locations we didn't get any service at all and our day at sea was the same situation.

How communication worked out with us is a lot of planning. We mainly all stayed together as a group but if we seperated, we planned where to meet up again in an hour or two. The only real concern was when I went to bed early and he stayed up late. The room was a challenge for him to get in to by himself. Luckily we found out the first night that the automatic door was very loud when it opened, so i was able to help him out.

Anyway, people looking into a cruise...I was very impressed. The staff was all very willing to help us out and fix whatever we needed.
