I have noticed that sometimes I pee white stuff before the actual urine comes out. I am almost sure that I don't have an UTI (will still go to the doctor), could this be retrograde ejaculation. Anyone experienced this?

Could be semen, or maybe a yeast infection in your bladder. I've had stuff like that before, but the doctor says nothing is wrong. Very frustrating!

I get white clumps often. I think its a UTI.
They come and go.
Good luck.

I am reviving this thread to let you know the results. Yup it was a uti. That white stuff was >100,000 colonies of proteus bacteria plus white blood cells and crystals. This bacteria is the common cause of uti for persons wearing a catheter-it was my first uti since I started wearing one. This bacteria converts the urea in urine to ammonia so pee has that characteristic smell. Also it turns urine alkaline. Noroxin cleared it up quickly. I plan to take vitamin C in large doses to lower the Ph of my urine at the first whiff of ammonia.

Contrary to popular belief, vitamin C doesn't significantly lower urinary pH, and because it is converted into oxalate in the body, it may contribute to urinary tract oxalate stone formation, if taken in high doses, especially in patients with compromised urinary tract function, such as those with SCI/SCD who already run a much higher risk of developing urinary stones.

It may also interact in unpredictable ways with other medications, especially those that alter renal function, or for which the kidneys are the main route of elimination, so it should always be used with caution, and only after consulting with your doctor.

Thanks anita, whats your opinion of cranberry juice to lower the pH of urine? I really wouldn't want to be using antibiotics again in a hurry if I have a reinfection. I am making an effort to consume more liquids.

I think that you are on the right track with increasing your fluid intake, and I think that pure water is best, rather than other things like juice or soda or coffee.

You want your water intake to be high enough so that your urine output flushes out any bacteria that might have found their way into your urinary tract, before they have a chance to attach to your tissues and infect them. If you perform intermittent catheterization, you also want to ensure that you do it often enough so that your bladder never fills beyond about 330 ml.

Studies have also shown that many SCI patients who use intermittent catheterization have a condition called nocturnal bladder distension, which is the bladder overfilling during the night, which can also contribute to infections. Catheterizing in the middle of the night can prevent that from happening, and reduce the risk of infection also.

Cranberry juice itself really doesn't affect the pH of urine. Its UTI protective benefit comes from a different mechanism.

Cranberry juice contains substances that prevent certain types of bacteria from adhering to the lining of the urinary tract, which is the first thing that the bacteria must do before they can cause an infection. So drinking cranberry juice can be somewhat helpful to reduce the likelihood of infection, although it doesn't work for all bacteria, and the most recent studies of its possible benefit for SCI patients were not conclusive.

But if you can tolerate the unsweetened juice mixed with water, then it couldn't do any harm to take it.

Anita,
This was an excellent post. I am post-polio, 51 years, and am prone to uti's and high bacteria count. So it is always welcomed when I read a good post on the topic. Thank you. Mary
