Many criticisms of judgment suggest that it is arrogant to say that Christian ideas are true and others are false. "How can you be so arrogant to believe that Christians will go to heaven and everyone else will go to hell." As we will see below, most Christians don't believe this. However the idea that this is arrogant seems odd. We do not criticize mathematics teachers for saying that 2 + 2 is always 4, and that believing sincerely in 5 is not acceptable. Either there is a God or there isn't. Either Christ died to save us or he didn't. If he did, it's hard to see how it can be arrogant to say so. If he didn't, then Christians are wrong, but not arrogant.

...as the line of reasoning here seemed WACKO and I didn't understand what he was saying.

Then after I thought about it, and I read it maybe once again, I understood.

Or, at the least, I understood where he/she was coming from.

I tried to say something similar awhile back about Paulwa's statements, but I think this author said it better...although I don't necessarily think the authors analogy fits this scenario.

Flicka, I agree the analogy doesn't fit. The equation 2+2=4 can be proven to be true and 2+2=5 false by simple demonstration and isn't a matter of belief.

If I hold 2 pennies in one hand and 2 pennies in the other and then combine them, anyone can clearly see that they make 4 together and no rational person would argue that they make 5. Even very young children understand it, and in fact that's the hands-on approach to teaching basic math. No "belief" is necessary.

Religious faith is totally a matter of belief and no similar concrete proof is possible.

IMO, religion has much more similarity to politics, where the views of one party just suit your own world view more closely than another one. Following that analogy, politics has its "true believers" who will defend their party to the death, "agnostics" who aren't sure which party to vote for, and "atheists" who ignore politics all together and don't even vote.
