I think that the fellow who wrote this book may be on to something.

"The oracles of God foretold the rising of an Antichrist in the Christian Church: and in the Pope of Rome, all the characteristics of that Antichrist are so marvelously answered that if any who read the Scriptures do not see it, there is a marvelous blindness upon them." Taken from The Fall of Babylon by Cotton Mather in Froom's book, The Prophetic Faith of Our Fathers, Vol. 3, pg. 113.

Cotton Mather was a Puritan minister, social conservative and was influential in early American science.

While Mather's writtings were very important to early America, his writings do not hold up well outside his time. Mather died in 1728.

Haven't read those writings but MerryA's answer looks like it was taken directly out of some encyclopedia and is only some person or group of peoples opinion from what they read of others opinions inked on other pages taken from yet other opinions inked on other pages. Just because it appears in print does not make it true unless it can stand the test of time and move billions of people as the bible has done. Although I do admire the fictional medical diagnostic miracles performed by Greg House. ;-)

And yet there are still people today who find the Biblical description of the antichrist fits the Pope very well. I guess that some things will never change.

If Mather was "on to something", what do you think it is? Are you claiming a specific pope was/is/will be Antichrist, or that the "position" of pope itself is Antichrist?

So, it's the position itself?

Agreed, there are always some ignorant KKK type folks who will claim the Pope is the antichrist.

Has every Pope been an antichrist in your opinion?

Cotton Mather was also a strong advocate for the notion that the Bible fully supported enslavement of blacks.

Quote:
Massachusetts, like many American colonies, had roots in a scrupulous fundamentalist Protestantism. Christianity was no barrier to slave-ownership, however. The Puritans regarded themselves as God's Elect, and so they had no difficulty with slavery, which had the sanction of the Law of the God of Israel. The Calvinist doctrine of predestination easily supported the Puritans in a position that blacks were a people cursed and condemned by God to serve whites. Cotton Mather told blacks they were the "miserable children of Adam and Noah," for whom slavery had been ordained as a punishment.

Take your pick of Popes. They were of their time and no more or less perfect than many historical leaders and existing leaders or religious figures. I am not convinced the antichrist is a single
individual but may be a composite of an international ideology just as are the church ages.

There is within the Catholic hierarchy the belief that the 13th and last Pope will turn against the beliefs of the Catholic church and join the anti christ in allegiance.

Here's a very incomplete list of people who have been openly accused of being the Antichrist:

Everyone who has followed Bible prophecy has been anticipating the appearance of the Antichrist for nearly 2000 years. Every generation has their new list of potential candidates.

All I can say is he's sure taking his time about it, and everyone in the past who has made predictions about his coming has been wrong.

The bible looked ahead and said people would say those things about the tardiness of His appearing, but in a day when you think not he will come and catch some unawares. Like the ten virgins, five wise with oil in their lamps and five foolish who had not enough oil and were unprepared. Man will go on marrying and giving in marriage and living their lives when He will come for His own at the blink of an eye they will be gone from this earth then the anti christ will be revealed to explain away the mystery and to entrap those who remain with his lies and half truths. Jesus said those who have refused Him will believe a lie and be damned and will not be able to see the truth after that.
Paul

Well, you must admit that the track record certainly isn't very good and lots of people in the past obviously believed a lie. Are they all doomed because of it?

They are not doomed if they accepted Christ. The lie that damn's eternally is the one the anti christ tells. He hasn't come along yet. If you under stood the gospel you would not have these questions because it is not a book of mythology and old wives tails as you suppose but is the living word of God!

According to prophecy the Pope is a marvelous antichrist, and if he isn't the antichrist he'll do until the main one comes along.

That's right shakey, I do think. I have many thoughts. Some of my thoughts are original while others have already been thought of by people besides myself.

Are you sure? Here I thought it might be you, as judgemental and knowledgeable as you are. I figured with the God complex you have going on, you might be Christ our savior, himself.

Or Satan..

Heck, lately,. who can tell the difference.

That's something that we are all guaranteed MerryA, we've got more important things to pray for than that.

Those are trying to convert others to their beliefs might heed this passage, as well:

Quote:
Matthew 10:12And when ye come into an house, salute it. 13And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

We've all heard your message over and over, and those of us who choose to reject it are not likely to be converted. We understand that you hold your beliefs strongly but so do most of the rest of us.

If you can't respect that, at least "shake the dust" and let it go.
