I saw my neurologist last week. He has determined that years of walking with crutches have damaged my ulner nerves in both arms. I was told to "Learn to live with it! Nothing can be done."

Note: I have been in a power chair for the last six years.

I have recently been thinking of such a community you mentioned Mary, we have tons of assisted living facility geared to the 70plus folks who have substantial incomes. My Mom lives in one not to far from me, pays about $4000mo, and she does not even require physical care at this point, it would cost considerably more if she did.

If there were a "younger" more affordable similiar type facility where folks could receive the care needed and still have whatever degree of independence they want or can do.
I am fortunate to qualify for in home help a few hours a day right now, but maintaining a house and all that goes with it is getting harder and harder.

My husband "does not get it" and I feel it's only a matter of time before a major domestic shift will occur.

I'm tired all the time, and see very few options out there to improve the quality of my life at this point.

Wish I could gather up all of us in one place, hire some great aides, a 5 star chef to cook for us, and kick back and wile away the hours playing bingo, scrabble and and whatever else we'd all like to do.

t'is but a dream I know, folks.

take care,
Donna

Our household is moving into that area now also. I can do little with my arthritis and my wife is overworked and won't slow down. I know she can't keep up this pace because she is 72 and a cancer surviver with arthritis and other medical problems starting wiith her. Our son in his late thirties lives with us and is busy with his life but does kind of watch over us. I think we could use some help by someone outside the home but am totally unknowledgeable about this. My wife drags her feet on the subject but I can see it coming down the pike pretty fast no matter what she says. I think such things as walk in shower may be in our near future, expensive as that is, I find just a simple shower is getting very hard for me and sitting down in the tub would be impossible cause I couldn't get up. I can't button my shirts and am finding simple daily routine to be harder by the day. Aging with medical problems is very common these days with many people and it is unnerving wondering how we are gong to deal with it all.

I am just 56 and dread the thought of living another couple of decades potentially, probably less, but the downhill sprial is scary.

There might be some agencies that focus on your age bracket and can provide some helpful suggestions in your area. Look under Senior services, council on aging, even a local senior citizen center to start.

Good luck,
take care,
Donna

Paul, the best option I've seen for showers short of a remodel is if you have a bathtub the shower chair that is inside the tub and goes over to the outside so one can sit down of the outside and then slide over to the inside thus eliminating the need to step into the shower. I also recently bought a button hook and can't figure out why I waited so long.

Thanks for the ideas, Paul. I have a good tub chair finally. I think our 1940's bath needs upgrading. Ha.

I find buttoning shirts difficult, too, so I have gone to snaps which work better for me, but may be harder with your arthritis. If they won't work for you, try to find someone who can sew some Velcro strips onto your shirts.

I was just reading some of the more recent replies to this subject. I think what this would take is some government funded inexpensive housing strictly limited to the physically challenged. What I envision is mini suites on the outer circle with centralized dining and socialization areas where people could congregate at will if so desired. I think the community could hire their own aides/therapists which would be shared by the group. What might be nice is a communal dinner or hire someone to cook for the group once or twice a week. And of course the location would have to be in the sunny southwest! I could even go for some hanky panky every now and then! lol Mary

Contact your statewide Area Agency on Aging. It might be called something different in your state. There is a national funded program each state runs according to their own agenda. It is for people who are at risk of going into nursing homes.

AND IT WORKS!!!

Peace, peach

In some areas these are called "Independent Living Centers." There is one here in the South Texas area called the Valley Association for Independent Living," or "VAIL." I know no one associated with it, but here is a link to their website. You could try a Google search for independent living centers in the state or city that interests you and see what comes up.
