I'm about to have my 23rd anniversary of living as a SCI. My butt is now so boney and painful to sit on. My max amount of time to sit on my Ride Design cushion is 8 to 9 hrs. In the past 3 yrs. I've dealt with 2 diff pressure sores and finally healed.
During that up and down time I lost muscle and weight all over.

What I'm wondering is if any of you SCI are with boney butts also. What type of cushion do you sit on and mattress you use?

I've got a comfortable air matt from Hill Rom. This week I was told I will have to return it and get a preventive matt which isn't air. Anyone lay on one and how is it? Medicare will not pay now that it's healed. The matt has helped my butt tremendusly and need it for life, but can't afford to buy.

I'd like to hear from other SCI.

Kim

I am SCI of 35+ years, very skinny/boney butt, 125 lbs at my max weight. (I do have a above knee amputation that lowers my weight somewhat) but believe me, my butt is boney! I have had very little problem with pressure sores, never one that I had to get off of to heal. I use the regular high profile Roho cushion in may wheelchair and use the low profile one in my office chair that I transfer into to work. I work at a computer 8 hours a day 5 days a week. I believe in the Roho cushions! I've been blessed not to have had to revert to any special type of matt for sleeping so I cann't help there. Good luck!

I have a boney butt & have for 24 years (after having major flap surgery). I use a Jay 2 cushion & sleep on a bladder water bed. I always keep an eye on my skin though and get off it when I see trouble (only a few times in 24 years).

I want to research some of the SCI organizations to see if they are doing anything about boney butts for the aging. We need botox injections or some type of butt implants. It would save money in the long run and give us extended years of relief.

Would any of you be interested??

Yes and ROHO Cushions for 34yrs. but I also use electrical stimulation to rebuild muscle tone back there and have gotten a lot back. You should be able to get one from one of the links off of Christopher Reeves Foundation web site. I'm going to try and see if I can get one from them as well, because mine is getting old. Here are a couple of links for you. By the way...EMS can also prevent you form getting pressure sores and helps a lot with circulation.
