The earth's population has been doubling about every 35-40 years for quite a while, and that clearly can't be sustained. We're at around 6.8 billion now and that means we'd be closing in on 14 billion by the middle of the 21st century and at least 25-30 billion by 2100 at the current rate.

Obviously that can't go on indefinitely, so something will bring it to an end. Either we'll learn to control population growth on our own or nature will do it for us by some combination of famine, disease, and wars over dwindling resources.

Our children and grandchildren are going to live to see those days, and we owe it to them to see that they don't inherit a nightmare world, but I'm pessimistic that we have the foresight to do anything about it.

"If we don't halt population growth with justice and compassion, it will be done for us by nature, brutally and without pity - and will leave a ravaged world."

We also need to reduce our per capita consumption of virtually everything.

The latest figures I heard (and I can't vouch for their accuracy) was that the US has 5% of the world's population but uses 30% of its resources.
