Hey People - Looking for anyone that has owned one of these cushions. Battling with a pressure sore (stage 3) and wondering if I purchased this cushion, if I could still work a few hours and still be healing.

Looking forward to hearing from any user.

Mark

I'd never heard of them before, and their claims on stage 4 sore healing sound fantastic. Any other time I would say no way a stage 4 could heal while sitting on it, but it is possible this cushion is credible.

From their website:
Quote:
Before Airpulse PK
•Client had stage 4 pressure sore measuring 15 cm x 8 cm
•Restricted sitting time and unable to work
After using Airpulse PK for 3 months
•Client sitting 12 hours per day
•Sore reduced to 6 cm x 5 cm
After using Airpulse PK for 6 months
•Client sitting 12 hours per day
•Sore reduced to 4 cm x 2 cm
•Client is back to work

If you do buy the cushion and heal while still sitting on your wound, please let us know!

I bought one about 7 years ago when they first came on the market because I thought with a cushion like that I would no longer needed to do weight shifts. But the pump was quite loud and since I was in frequent meetings at work, the noise was distracting and I returned it. I assume they improved their design a lot since then and it might very well help heal pressure sores as it seems to make sense if the pressure changes regularly.
However I also want to point you to the following link as a precaution, but I am not sure how reliable the source is and it is also 4 years old.

Luc - Thanks so much for responding. May I ask how long you used the unit? Also, did you get that "pressure mapped"? I saw another post that mapped that cushion with a roho and said the roho mapped out better. It's a very difficult decision....I called Aquila and asked for references in MI that I could contact and physically see the unit, but they said they only had permission to give out one individual's name in NJ.

I also contacted Mary Free Bed Rehab unit in Grand Rapids, MI and Rehab Institute of Chicago and both knew of a couple people that bought the unit, but had no feedback on how they liked it. They both said the Aquila has not provided a demo, which seems odd if you think you have a good system and want to get publicity.

If you can reach out to any other "users" appreciate any feedback!

Hi Mark,
I used the cushion for about 3 weeks only. I didn't do any pressure mapping because I didn't have any issues at that time. I only got the cushion because I thought it would be a good preventive piece of equipment to avoid getting pressure sores. But as I mentioned before, I didn't like it because of the noise the pump made. But then again, I had their first model and I am sure they have made a lot of improvements in many areas since then.
Have you heard of the Ride Design cushion? I heard some good things about it. Supposedly it completely offloads all pressure from your ischiums and tailbone, giving pressure sores a chance to heal. http://www.ridedesigns.com/
It might be worthwhile looking into this one as an alternative.

I have owned an Aquila Airpulse PK cushion system for over 2 years now. I will tell you I had stage 4 ulcers and my wounds would not heal until I got this cushion. I have steadily got better and my wounds are almost gone now due to the cushion. I get up with my wife every morning at 5:ooam and get back out of my chair normally by 8:30pm with NO pressure reliefs other than what the cushion provides. They are right some of the controllers are noisier than others. They offer 3 types and some make more noise than others. I ignore the noise. As long as you can hear it it is working for you. Recently we had problems with the cushion leaking and the controller reading "low pressure" so they had to be sent for repair and that takes a week + to get it back. I bought a second one to have a backup and recommend you do also because with all things mechanical or electrical they will break and wear out. I've used Roho, Jay2 and others and they DO NOT help if you can't do pressure reliefs. I got my pressure soars sitting on these cushions. I don't have the upper body strength anymore so the Aquila is my only answer to my problems. Their support is great and will help you with a loaner if needed. Yes I recommend them but get a backup as soon as you can. I'm sure you have a backup wheelchair when yours breaks so you need a backup for this as well. I hope this helps.
