Religion isn't the cause of wars - it's the insistence that your religion is the only correct one and that you have the right and obligation to force others to believe as you do.

When religion brings a person comfort, tranquility, and empathy for others it's a very, very good thing. Unfortunately it also seems to bring out anger, hatred, and intolerance in a whole lot of people, and then it's a very, very bad thing.

I think you are right and maybe a bit wrong, Ghoti. Christianity is placing Jesus at the head of your life and it is Jesus Himself that says He is the only way to God the Father. He adamant that He is the only door and He says we are to go into the highways and byways and compell them to come to Him as if you are literally dragging them from the flames of hell....well, most of us are not that good of a christian because we don't compell them but merely move on letting them fume because we are proseltizers and taking advantage of peoples rights to believe and go their own way. He also told the apostles that if a city or town refused the message of the gospel they were to shake the dust of that town off their feet and move on. That is pretty hard to do with your friends and you know there will come a day when that friend will accuse you of not compelling them to believe when they are facing God in judgement. Jesus said there would be lots of tears in that day..from both sides because some of those people will be beloved family members and friends. Sad..for all concerned.
Starlight your song is nearly right because the River of Life will flow out of the eastern side of the New Jerusalem for the use of the people and will be lined with the trees of Life..but it won't run into any seas because in the new heavens and new earth there will be no oceans or seas, this according to the bible of course. Maybe it is correct by some other writing or belief.

Maybe because He was the One who would erradicate man's original sin?

Paulwa, IMO there are many ways to bring a person into harmony and communion with the creator. Belief in the divinity of Jesus is the way that works for you and many others and that's a good thing as long as you don't try to force it on others. That's where the conflicts come in.

I'm fully aware of the claims made about Jesus in the Bible, but you do realize that the holy books of all the other religions in the world make the same kinds of claims for their faiths. IMO there is one creator and all the different religions of the world just see him from different perpectives. That means they are all partly right but also partly wrong.

So I try to be tolerant of all faiths, but bristle at anyone who tells me they KNOW the mind of God because some book says so. God is FAR too vast and complex to be defined by any one book IMO.

ghoti, while I agree religion can be a very good thing, I refuse to give it a pass when it brings out the very bad things. Even if the majority are on the path toward the good, that goodness is diminished by the minority doing bad when majority allows it by their silence.
