Ghotti, I realize you're union and I have an incorporated small business so we come at this from two different angles. I suggest you check out the current teacher/union/cost NJ dispute issues currently getting ink to understand where I am coming from. Teaching, at least in Canada, is still a better than average way to combine fair renumeration plus job satisfaction type of profession. Greg, here in the US it is very difficult for a teacher to afford to raise a family, drive a decent car, and own a home unless they are very frugal with their money and/or have a spouse who works.
yea, so?
what about others who make less?

Average teacher salary in CA is $59,825 (Starting salary $35,760), not bad if you figure in, better than private employee, retirement benefits and uncredible time off. Source

Point being that it takes a college education to start in a fairly low paying career.
I think teachers should at least make enough to buy a home in the area. I don't know that someone making $59k/yr could buy a home here.

Teacher pay is among the lowest for folks with a college degree, especially considering you're stuck in a room with 30 teenagers 6 hours a day and supposed to keep them quiet and attentive and actually get them to learn things that most of them don't care about.
How many people would trade their current jobs for that?

Average private industry salary $55K, Avg federal worker $66K, Average Teacher (varies by state) MI %$4.7K CA $59.8K.
Considering the fringe benefits and time off, Teachers aren't so bad off.
Oops, forgot the Source http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-03-04-federal-pay_N.htm

That's a bit better! Bob, do you think a teacher could afford to buy a home in your area?

flix, u atually thought a teacher somewhere only got paid $4k? It would certainly explain the mentality of my relatives in Mississippi!
I wasn't worked up. Just wondered where the "4" actually belonged in the figure.

so it's simple really, the reason horrible teen's have horrible teachers is because engaging, interesting, people would be all too likely to beat the livin' crap outta 'em.

im sure theres bad teachers out there, but i had good ones
u cant judge a teacher till you know them, and if u believe your kid without calling the school or teacher, then thats not a good followup parent
why? cuz most kids dislike teachers, esp teachers that give kids a push to learn, or stupid lazy ass punks who dont care
as judge judy says..... u know whena kids not lying? when they are asleep. lol...... kids will say anything not to be in trouble......

There are crappy teachers out there, for sure, but isn't that true of every profession? I realize everyone wants nothing but the best for their kids but ya gotta be realistic.
There's also an awful lot of kids with parents who don't support education or care how their kids behave. All it takes is to get 3-4 disruptive kids in a classroom of 30 and it can make life hell for a teacher.
There's justification for blame on both sides, but I'm sure we can all agree that if we could have quality teachers with 25 well-behaved willing learners in every classroom education would improve tremendously.
