I have been thinking of getting one of the emergency medical alert systems in case of a problem. Because of the television commercials, my first inclination was to try Life Alert, but after reading the complaints at this site I am less certain. If anyone has experience with such a product (pro or con) I would apreciate your response. Thanks.

I found this page today. It has helpful information. I'm still hoping some NM member(s) can provide feedback.

No personal experience, but if I were in the market for a system, based on what I've read, I would check out Philips Lifeline service.

I use them and wouldn't be without!

Mine is through a major hospital... through the waiver program.

Why not just carry a cell phone. I use tmobile prepaid. After paying a 1 time fee of $100 to get on the gold plan it costs $10 a year to rollover my minutes.

I use T-Mobil prepaid, too, but if I were to slip in the shower or fall out of my chair, my cell phone might skid out of reach. With the pendant, all I would have to do is press the button.

All the systems I have seen suffer from one major shortcoming -- they require a land line. If that goes dead or you're on the road, you're stuck. I'm surprised nobody offers a cell phone device with a GPS to guide emergency personnel to you.

There are a few ruggedized, waterproof cellphones on the market too, such as the new Motorola Barrage, which can withstand being submerged in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes:

If you could attach it to a lanyard for example, and wear it like a pendant at all times, then I suppose it could be another option to address the shortcomings you mentioned.

Since all cellphones currently deployed in the U.S. include mandatory GPS or A-GPS, calling 911 would automatically provide them with your location, if your community's 911 center supports the new E911 protocol.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any cheap prepaid phone that is waterproof, or that could even survive the humidity of being in the bathroom for any length of time, much less survive being dropped in the toilet or bath tub.

If you know of one, I would certainly like to hear about it.
