Palin Slams Obama Plan to Expand Drilling as Stall Tactic
Posted: 04/2/10Filed Under:Senate, Barack Obama, Environment, Sarah Palin, Obama Administration 239 Comments + Join the discussion »TEXT SIZE:AAAPRINT SHARE It didn't take long for critics from both sides of the drilling argument to jump all over President Obama's plan to expand offshore oil and gas exploration along the Atlantic coast and in the Gulf of Mexico.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin urged Republican senators not to "take the bait" and said the president was simply trying to shift focus away from new environmental regulations and the revival of costly global warming legislation in the Senate.

"Instead of 'drill baby drill,' " she said, echoing her battle cry as a 2008 vice presidential candidate, "the more you look at this, the more you realize, it's 'stall, baby, stall.'" Writing in the National Review Online, Palin scoffed at Obama's announcement that he would "consider" development off the Atlantic coast and study areas in the Arctic. "I've seen plenty of such studies. What we need is action," she said.

The Sierra Club was disappointed in Obama's drilling initiative for entirely different reasons.

"The oil industry already has access to drilling on millions of acres of America's public lands and water," Michael Brune, head of the non-profit environmental group, said in a statement. "We don't need to hand over our last protected pristine coastal areas just so oil companies can break more profit records. . . . One oil spill is all it takes to destroy a coastal tourism economy and the jobs that depend on it." Brune, who wants Obama to take more steps toward clean energy, argued that "dirty, expensive offshore drilling" would not lower gas prices or establish the nation's energy independence.

On Tuesday, Obama said his administration would approve more drilling leases off the mid-Atlantic and southern coastline and in the Gulf of Mexico. He said Bristol Bay, a large fishery in Alaska, would remain off-limits. And no action was announced to open up off-shore drilling on the Pacific coast.

I really am not sure why people think offshore rigs are such an eyesore. Especially at 125 miles off the coast.

I thought it was more about environmental impact? Like nuclear, after that rig leaked, years ago, americans are like elephants even though technology and saftey standards have improved 100 fold.

For some it will always be about environmental impact. In the meantime, it's interesting watching Obama paint the Republicans into a corner.

No, no, no, a thousand times NO!

Which part of this game plan does no one get? Money, money, money. Ruled by the big conglomerates. The rich and powerful. More money and power.

Green, ONLY GREEN.

If you think for a moment that we have an oil shortage than you haven't done your homework.

IMO it's a very shrewd move by Obama. The republican strategy has been to demonize him and vote "no" en mass to everything he proposes, and the extreme right embraces it.

Oil companies have been drooling over the chance to do more offshore drilling for decades and they will put lots of pressure on the republicans to vote for it. Any republicans that do will get castigated by the far right.

It's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" pickle for republicans in congress. Obama is finally growing into the job, and I like it.

Here's my take - all the liberal dems in the house will vote "no" but there might be as many as 30-40 conservative dems who vote "yes". That means that if nearly all the repubs vote "yes" it will pass and the oil companies will be happy.

But if they do that they will feel the wrath of the right-wingers who demonize Obama. So most of them will vote "no" and one of their favorite issues will die because they failed to support it.

IMO there's almost no chance of this actually passing, and the irony is delicious.

Instead of??????????????..................I DID (list my reasons). I always do. Did you click on the link, Lazer?

The Energy Non-Crisis

No one seems to have the initiative to click on the links, or follow up a little further. Simple on the internet. You don't have to go to the library anymore.

There is lots of info on different aspects of an energy non crisis to read about, Lazer, AND from DIFFERENT angles. So the other side of being sarcastic about us peons envying the rich is to look into the other side of the story. AND, I don't mean just read the headlines and poo poo the story.
