My wife and I own a beachfront condo on Sanibel Island, http://sanibelsanddollarc201.com/. and have tried to make it as wheelchair accessible as possible. Although there is a place on Sanibel Island that rents beach wheelchairs, http://www.billysrentals.com/bikes/challenged/ we are considering the purchase of a beach wheelchair for some of our guests to use. We are familiar with the Landeez, http://www.landeez.com and the Hippocampe, http://www.hippocampe.co.uk/product.php Does anyone have personal experience with one or both of these beach wheelchairs? If so, would you please give us some feedback? Are there other beach wheelchairs that we should consider? Because all of us have different sizes and needs, is it even practical for us to make such a wheelchair available for our guests? Any thoughts/suggestions will be most appreciated. Thanks.

JohnBoy, Thanks for the information concerning the “free use” wheelchairs available at Daytona Beach. If I have found the one that you used, it is called a Surf Chair, is made by J-Mac Industries, Inc., http://www.jmacindustries.com/ and is advertised as an All-Terrain Wheelchair made of PCV. Please let me know if this is the one that you used. How easy was it to transfer to/from the Surf Chair? Its price is more reasonable than the two beach wheelchairs that I mentioned in my original post. I wonder how easy it is to assemble/disassemble. I will look into this further.

As for the accessibility of our condo, we have received a lot of positive feedback from our wheelchair using guests. One recent guest’s comments are in the Feb 2010 Global Access News, http://www.globalaccessnews.com/feb2010.htm We have done a lot to improve our condo’s accessibility, yet there is more that needs to be done. Our website lists some of its accessibility features. Although our condo is on the second floor, the elevator and ramps have eliminated all steps between our condo and the beach. I could go on, but this is not the place to do so. If you have specific questions, feel free to send me a private message.

Thanks again for mentioning the Surf Chair. Ken

My husband is a quad, and we own both beach wheelchairs. My vote -- the Landeez hands down. Although the video for the Hippocamp is appealing (thus our purchase), it is very hard to wheel across soft sand. I am an able bodied 46 year old, and I cannot puch the Hippocamp across soft sand without help. The Landeez is much easier! Also, if you do buy the Landeez, please let me know by reply post -- we may interested!

Franswife, Thanks for your response to our beach wheelchair question. The Hippocampe video is impressive. It is good to get feedback from someone who has used both. In any case, during the past six months we have decided not to purchase a beach wheelchair, but offer to pay for the rental of one from Billy's Rentals, http://www.billysrentals.com/bikes/challenged/ , the on-island renter of the Landeez. Since my wife and I do not live near Sanibel Island, the storage, cleaning, maintenance, transportation and liability of the beach wheelchair are not practical for us. For only $85 per week, Billy's rentals will deliver/pick up the wheelchair to our condo. Several of our guests have rented one of the Landeez wheelchairs from Billy's Rentals and have been pleased with them.

Most of the guests renting our condo this winter need its accessible features. One of our guests (C6-7 injury) has arranged for daily physical assistance from a care giver living on Sanibel Island. With ramps and the elevator, there is not a single step from inside our condo to the beach. We believe that our condo is the most accessible accommodation on Sanibel Island. If you are interested in additional information about our condo, feel free to send me a private message on this website or thru the contact page on http://sanibelsanddollarc201.com/

Thanks again for sharing your experience with the two beach wheelchairs.

Hi everyone! My husband and I design, manufacture, and sell the DeBug Beach Wheelchairs. We also have rental agents throughout the US, and other countries. We specialize in custom seating, (reclining backs, tilt-n-space, etc) Check out our web-site, http://www.beachwheelchair.com, or call me 850-478-5765. If anyone has used one of our chairs, I'd love any feedback. As a chair user myself, I totally understand the frustration of not having access to the beach

Hi Ken, I thought I would suggest the Action Trackchair http://www.actiontrackchair.com and see what your opinion was. I would however, strongly suggest a proper cleaning due to ocean salt getting into electrical connectors.Feel free to contact Karen karenjc1013@gmail.com .

As a follow-up, My wife and I were at our Sanibel Island condo over Thanksgiving. While walking the beach I meet a fellow in a Landeez beach wheelchair that he had rented from Island Rental Services, http://www.islandrentalservices.net/ He had paid $275 to rent it for the week. Since he has a time share at Casa Ybel Resort and comes to Sanibel Island every year, I told him that for next year he might want to consider contacting Billy's Rentals, http://www.billysrentals.com/bikes/challenged/ which rents the same beach wheelchair for $85 per week. They also deliver and pick-up. Billy's has 6-7 beach wheelchairs, some of which have been donated, and considers it a public service to provide them to people who need them. I talked with Billy about this, and he told me that the $85 really does not even cover their cost of cleaning/maintaining the wheelchairs, but this is a service that he wants to provide. Hope this information is helpful.
