Are there any mothers out there with SCI who have had children and can give some advice. I am curious if I have to have a Cesarian Section, have any of you given birth naturally? I am 5 months pregnant and getting kinda scared... is there any advice you could give me concerning making things easier after the baby comes?

Liz, i too am a T12 Para, no i did not have to have a C-section although this doctor in my home town told me that was the only way they would be able to deliver my baby. I refus to accept his word so i went to another doctor in a town 55 miles from my home bigger town and this doctor told me that i would be able to have natural birth with a little help with forecept and i did deliver her with no problem. i felt all the cramps due to my level being low. but with that the doctors do let you know that sometime the forecepts can leave permanet marks or cause problems. sorry i did not reply sooner have not been on line lately if you have had your baby already congrats go out to you. Happy New Years

I am a T-5 para and have 4 daughters. 3 were born after I was injured, and all were natural. I could feel each of the babies moving and kicking when I was pregnant and was able to feel contractions even though I have a complete injury. I did have an epidural in place for rapid delivery of meds to control the possibility of dusreflexia, but that's it. Hope this helps!

I guess you are real busy with the baby now? I wonder if my experience could help? My son is now 6 and I was scared silly wondering how I would do all the mom stuff. I believe I had an easier time with many things than walking moms do. I always had a lap to change a diaper on. I had a wheeled combination bassinet/high chair circa 1949. I'd pop baby in the wheeled contraption from the crib and down the hall we'd go first thing in the morning. I'm T-12 also and since I have some stomach muscles, I could lean over to pick him up until he weighed about 18lbs. From then he learned to step up on the footrest of my manual and powerchair and I'd lift him up on to my lap. Now that he's a big boy (50lbs) he likes to ride standing up on the back of my power chair. He makes a lot of kids jealous seeing him ride while they gotta walk! The only really hard part was coming up with snappy responses to stupid questions from walkers. "Have you ever dropped him?!!" I waffled from "Not yet", or "Just on his head." No, I never, ever dropped him. "You must have a really hard time." Not really sure if that was a question, or just a statement that the person assumed. You can imagine my rolling eyes.

Of course you can have babies without a C section. Be sure you have a doctor with enough common sense and experience to support you. I had two babies after SCI (T-9) and both went well. One concern was avoiding pressure sores with the extra weight gain, and also we had to pay attention to figure out when I actually was in labor. For my daughter we induced labor around her due date, when the checkup indicated I was already dilated. When my son was born I started having back pain, then the fetal monitor indicated labor had started.

You'll take care of babies and raise kids the same way you do everything else - by creative problem solving, trial and error, and asking for help when necessary (something I should have done more often!)

Good luck. Keep asking for advice!

hi, first of all, congratulations! you must be so excited! do you know if you are having a boy or girl?

i am a t10 (i've been a para for over 30 years) with 7 year old twins delivered by c-section, but only because they were not head down and i am a proud owner of 3 rods from t4-l3 in my spine. they were not able to do a spinal block because of the rods, so i had to be given a general anesthetic. recovery was pretty easy from the c-section, but now i have that ugly, ugly lumpy stomach since my muscles were cut and i don't have any flexibility because of the rods. but that's just vanity.

seriously, it is all dependent on the baby's position, his/her health, your health, when you go into labor, etc etc. it seems like they don't automatically assume that just because you have sci that somehow you are automatically at a super high risk.

i did go into early labor, so my two were born 8 weeks early and had to spend a couple of weeks in the nicu before they could come home, but they've always been active, healthy, happy kids.

again, congratulations!!

Liz was 5 mo PG when she posted in Oct. '08. I don't think she has been back since then. I hope she had a healthy baby.
