'Roll Models' Sought
Discovery Through Design has launched a national search for women "roll models." "Women in wheelchairs have been overlooked far too long," says Wendy Crawford, a founder of the group. "There are paralyzed women all over the world who are not just surviving, but thriving." All women wheelchair users may enter or be nominated for the contest.

Top fashion designers Nicole Miller, Dana Buchman and Lily Pulitzer are teaming up with wheelchair manufacturer Quickie of Sunrise Medical to create three wheelchairs that will be unveiled at a May 17 fashion show sponsored by Discovery Through Design. The wheelchairs will be awarded to the three winners of the contest at that time.

Discovery Through Design raises funds for paralyzed women's initiatives, as well as spinal cord injury research. "There are so many important issues that need to be addressed, including accessible mammogram machines, adequate reproductive health care services and domestic violence interventions," says Crawford.
