United Spinal Sues for Parking in D.C.
United Spinal Association and The Equal Rights Center reached a groundbreaking settlement with Washington, D.C., that will make 17,000 of the city's parking meters more accessible to people with disabilities. That means lowering meters and not fining those who use out-of-state parking permits. Washington, D.C., has been the only jurisdiction in the United States that did not recognize placards issued by other jurisdictions.

According to the terms of the settlement, Washington, D.C., will ensure that every block with parking meters has curb ramps; will require newly installed (at least two per block) - accessible meters facing the sidewalk; will remove barriers to accessible parking meters; and will revise its policy to make it easier for out-of-towners to obtain parking placards.
