Kefty — The Ultimate Wheelchair Workout Gadget

workoutTrying to get a decent workout in a wheelchair has never been the easiest. Devices exist, but they’re either too expensive or only usable by people with specific abilities.

Personally, I’ve never been able to afford any of the good ones, like the thousands of dollars Vitaglide, or the wheelchair universal home gym that can cost hundreds of dollars. Arm bikes are fortunately a lot less expensive, but they can get boring, and as a quad they’re hard to use sometimes.

This is why I was so excited after watching this video showing all of the exercises you can do from a wheelchair using the Kefty portable home gym. Weighing only 4.4 pounds, the Kefty is low impact and you can do hundreds of motions from your wheelchair by hooking it onto the back of your wheelchair or under your footrest.

Yup, it just hooks right on. And the weight makes it safer than free weights, in case you drop it on the floor.

The surprising part is that the Kefty was not initially designed for wheelchair-users. It was designed for the masses, catering to those who need more user-friendly workout devices – busy moms, office workers on the go, those kind of people, and scooped up celebrity fans like Ellen Degeneres and Snoop Dogg.

After they launched their product, the people at Kefty realized they had such a great product on their hands that it would also work with the disability population. And since promoting their product four years ago, it has become one of the most-searched wheelchair and rehab exercisers.

Of course, the exercises you can do with the Kefty depends on how well you can move your arms and fingers. One of the coolest things about the Kefty is that it’s also user-friendly for those with limited grip. It’s entirely made up of circular bars that aren’t too wide or narrow, making it easy to hold. And since the device weighs only a little over 4 pounds, most people will be able to use it, even quadriplegics with C5-4 injuries.

You can do several different workout moves with the Kefty from your wheelchair, but one of the most popular workouts for wheelchair-users is hooking it behind the wheelchair and using it for shoulder presses. Overhead chest presses, pull-ups, ab crunches, military presses and fly presses are some other moves you can do with it, and these are just some of the most obvious workouts.

The Kefty almost sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Well, you can put your fears at bay. It does exist and it only costs $150, making it one of the cheapest wheelchair workout machines ever invented. This price is especially appealing considering all the exercises that are possible with it, and even better, it’s made from a plastic that leaves a minimal carbon footprint. You definitely get your money’s worth.

So the next time you’re wishing you could get in an easier workout from your wheelchair and are stumped for ideas, think of the Kefty. At $150 each, it almost a crime not to try one. They’re cute and cool, and they’re poised to change thousands of wheelchair-users lives.
