Kickstarter Project: Horizon Trike

In the very cool department, Outrider USA, an ultralight adventure vehicle company, has created the Horizon Trike — a full-suspension on-road/off-road battery powered adaptive trike.

The idea for the Horizon started a year ago when Christopher Wenner, an adventurer, Ph.D, and quadriplegic contacted the folks at Outrider and shared his vision of building an electric trike that would take him on and off the beaten path. Stoked, the three co-founders of the company worked with Wenner to create the Horizon prototype, one that has since taken Wenner on incredible trips and adventures.

What also grabbed my attention is that the Horizon trike is available in nine different adaptive option modes including:

  • Standard controls (full power mode)
  • Full power mode controlled by right or left “tri-pin” hand control for people with limited hand movement
  • Hand cycle (arm crank) with power assist
  • Foot peddle cycle with power assist.
  • Foot peddle cycle with power assist and hand controls for right or left hand.
  • The trike also features an actuated (rising) seat and fold-down handlebars for easier transfers.

Top speed of the Horizon trike is 25 miles an hour and it can go 30 miles on a single battery charge. Larger battery systems extend the distance up to 60 or 100 miles depending on battery pack.

It is stoke-worthy to check out the Horizon link and videos that show the amazing “go anywhere” capabilities of the trike. The goal is to raise $100,000 to afford tooling and enable an initial run of 30 trikes.

Where would you go on a Horizon Trike?

Hey! I’m the guy with the prototype. Just want to highlight that as a complete C-5/6 quad w/ little arm strength I’m able to ride the Horizon easily, safely, all day long.

Here’s a little news story about a ride I did from Tucson to San Diego: http://www.kpbs.org/news/2014/mar/17/quadriplegic-cyclist-hopes-inspire-others-disabili/

Hi Chris,

Awesome! This trike looks like a blast and I really appreciate the various adaptive configurations. Best of luck on the Kickstarter project, I look forward to being able to take a test ride when the run of 30 starts up.
