New App for Housing Rights

People with smartphones can now learn about their housing rights through an app released by the U.S.  Department of Housing and Urban Development. The app will educate the public on their rights and responsibilities under the Fair Housing Act and allows people to file housing complaints in real-time.

Ken Walden, an attorney at Access Living in Chicago, says HUD receives the most complaints about disability discrimination. However, he finds most people don’t know their rights. The app won’t end discrimination, he says, but it’s an innovative tool available to consumers and advocates. “I think it provides good basic content about the Fair Housing Act, about filing complaints and about the complaint process,” he says.

The app is available through the Apple app store.
